Droplet’s Containerisation – the perfect solution for geo-data company’s security concern

About Fugro

SECTOR: Infrastructure
REGION: Global

Background

Fugro is a Dutch multinational public company that specialises in collecting and analysing geological data, both on land and at sea.

As the world’s leading geo-data specialist, collecting and analysing comprehensive information about the Earth and the structures built on it, Fugro uses integrated data acquisition, analysis and advice to unlock insights from geo-data, and helps its customers to design, build and operate their assets in a safe, sustainable and efficient manner.

The Challenge

Fugro had security concerns around a legacy application and needed it to surpass strict security testing.

Fugro approached Managed Security Solutions (MSS) for assistance, says MD Shaun Piper: “The software we were initially considered for Fugro was an application that was deployed on vessels. It, however, morphed into what became the other application we were looking at, which was PerfectView.”

MSS has worked with Droplet Computing since its inception and saw it as the perfect solution to Fugro’s problem. Piper acknowledges that multiple companies have old applications that are vulnerable in some way, and in many cases, Droplet stands out as providing the appropriate remedy.

The Solution

Droplet provides a containerisation solution: the packaging together of software code with all its necessary components, isolating applications from other processes so they can run securely in different environments.

Droplet installs the app inside a Droplet container, and runs through the process of application dependencies. Fugro’s application wouldn’t run out of the box because it had the requirement of being linked back to AAD authentication.

Because there is a great deal of flexibility within the Droplet container, they could add the container to the domain, and within two hours they had a working solution – one that integrated onto the latest Windows 10, and ready to be security tested.

“What this project ultimately came down to was a cost-risk benefit analysis,” says Piper. “Simply put, there was a risk assessment done on the application they were using. They knew there was a vulnerability in it and that there was potential exposure and they had to weigh up the risk to the business versus the cost of putting that right.”

The Benefits

  • Simplified licensing
    Geared for subscription model
  • Cost-effective
No large-scale, data centre hardware overhead
  • Simplified
    No complex VDI infrastructure
  • Fast
    No bandwidth or latency limitations

Customer Testimonial

“I think the way that we’ve worked highlights the importance of partnership – people working together. A partnership with Droplet means you can deliver a simple, cost-effective solution to keep your customers’ legacy applicati”ons and systems running like clockwork.”
Shaun Piper, MD, Managed Security Solutions

“I’d recommend going through the proof of concept, because every case is different. For this case it was a good solution. There were some challenges related to signing in and authentication of uses, and so we tr”ied different alternatives until we solved it.”
Konstantinos Goulas, IT Business Consultant Europe & Africa, Fugro
